After a short period of training, he played in the "big band". Urs spent most of his free time practising and making music with his family, and after completing his apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, he was able to realise his wish to study music.

He successfully completed his studies in 1983 with an orchestral and teaching diploma. Further studies and masterclasses in horn, conducting and chamber music followed. As a horn player, he played in various orchestras and ensembles.
